4 Reasons You Should Consider Using A Grooming Spray On Your Dog

Grooming sprays for dogs are more than just a way to make your dog smell better, they also protect your dog’s coat and make it easier to brush or comb.

Using a detangling spray when brushing or combing is an important step when grooming your dog at home.

Not only does a grooming spray keep a dog’s coat soft and shiny but it also protects and reduces static electricity in a dog’s coat

Let’s take a look at some solid reasons why you should think about using a grooming spray on your double-coated dog

Makes Brushing Easier

A detangling spray or conditioning spray helps the dog brush or comb glide through the dog’s hair easier.

Depending on your dog’s coat texture, a conditioning spray is going to help a dog brush do what it’s meant to do.

Using a grooming spray when a dog blows coat is really important because it’s going to help combing and brushing be more efficient.

Reduces Static Electricity

Dogs get static electricity in their hair just like we do because their hair shafts are filled with positive and negative charges.

When you run a brush through a dry coat in a dry environment, it’s going to produce more static.

If you’ve ever brushed a double-coated dog that has a lot of static in its hair, I’m sure you’ve experienced the dog hair sticking to your face as it leaves the dog.

More static in a dog’s coat can lead to more mat and tangles.

Using a grooming spray or detangling spray before you run the brush through your dog’s coat will stop the static electricity and allow the dog brush to glide through the coat easier.

Also, if you’re using a brush or dog comb made out of metal on a dry coat the dog might be getting shocked each time the brush touches its coat.

Prevents Coat Breakage

When you brush a dog’s dry coat you run the risk of breaking its hair which can give its coat a dull appearance.

Using a hydrating dog spray adds moisture to a dog’s coat and skin so there’s less breakage.

Protects Your Dog’s Coat

Not only does a good grooming spray help to prevent coat breakage but many of them will also protect a dog’s coat from harsh elements, dirt, debris, urine and even the sun.

It gives the coat an extra layer of protection by creating a barrier.

Which Grooming Spray Should You Use?

There are thousands of dog grooming sprays available so it can be quite overwhelming to choose one.

What grooming spray you use will depend on your dog’s coat condition and what you’re needing the spray to do.

Not all grooming sprays are created equal and not all of them are going to work the same on every dog.

Does your dog have a dry coat?

A lot of static?

Do they have tangles?

Here are a few things to look for when choosing a grooming spray for your double coated dog:

Ingredients

You always want to make sure that the grooming spray you’re using is made for dogs and that it contains safe ingredients.

If your dog has allergies or sensitive skin, you’ll want to keep that in mind as well.

A few ingredients to stay from are tea tree oil, parabens, phthalates, alcohol, and artificial colors.

Scent

Some grooming sprays can have a strong scent so you’ll want to take that into consideration.

Strong scents like baby powder give me a headache so I try to stay away from that scent.

It’s also important to make sure you get a scent that your dog isn’t sensitive to.

Look for a scent that isn’t overpowering and read any reviews on that product if you can.

Finish

You don’t want a product that leaves a sticky or greasy buildup after you’re done brushing your dog.

Look for a spray that leaves the coat with a nice shine and smooth feel.

Keep in mind that if you get a product that contains silicone, if you spray this on a dog that is standing or laying on a laminate or ceramic floor it could leave make the floor slippery.

Cost

Cost definitely plays a role when choosing a grooming spray.

If you’re on a budget, stick with it.

You don’t have to spend $30 on a name-brand detangling spray when you get the same one for 1/2 the cost.

If you don’t want to spend the money on a detangling spray, you can dilute your dog’s conditioner with water and put it in a spray bottle.

Different types of Dog Grooming Sprays

Grooming sprays for dogs come in different forms that will help with brushing but also help to keep the coat soft, shiny and manageable.

  • Detangling Spray
  • Finishing Spray
  • Hydrating spray

I always try to get a grooming spray that hydrates and detangles.

Grooming Sprays I Use

As I mentioned before, I have a lot of grooming sprays in my possession at the moment.

I don’t use them all but I do reach for some more than others.

Just because these sprays are what I use, doesn’t mean I’m saying you should get them but these are what I actually have experience with.

  • Magic Mist
  • Ice on Ice
  • ProGro
  • Fluff & Puff
  • Aloe Hydrating Spray
  • Crown Royale ( I used to use this one with Sherman and Leroy all the time)

Magic Mist has been a favorite of mine this past year to use on Lou.

It leaves his coat soft and very manageable.

I also love the Ice on Ice and I’ve used that for years.

A new spray to me that I just started using this month is Fluff & Puff by Nature’s  Specialties

This spray works really well on Odin and it basically does everything.

I do think it has a strong scent but I can’t tell for sure since I lost most of my sense of smell 2 years ago.

I love the aloe hydrating spray and use it often, especially in the winter.

ProGro is another one that I use regularly even though it’s a conditioner.

I dilute it in a spray bottle and use it on high-priority areas that tend to mat easily like the furnishings, tail and butt area.

Grooming Sprays I’ve Heard Great Things About But I Haven’t Tried Them Yet

I can’t vouch for these grooming sprays myself but many of our friends use them and like the results.

  • The Stuff
  • Cowboy Magic
  • Show Sheen
  • Mane n’ Tail
  • Burts Bees
  • Just Divine
  • Tropiclean
  • Hydra Professional Ultra Dematting and Finishing Spray (I think I might order this one to try)

I have most of these on my Detangling Spray List in my Amazon Influencer Store

The only one that isn’t there is the Magic Mist which can be purchased from Cherrybrook.

I only endorse and recommend products that I personally use or products that come highly recommended by my peers. Please don’t spend money on any of these products unless you believe they are best for you and your Newfoundland. Read our full privacy policy here.
