Easy to make dehydrated sweet potato chews for dogs

My dogs have always loved sweet potato dog chews.

They love them so much that I have spent a small fortune buying them bags of sweet potato chews from the dog store.

Then one day the light went on my head. It’s just sweet potatoes.

It’s a single ingredient treat.

Why am I buying these and not making them?

So for the past few months that has been what I’ve been doing.

It’s so easy and if your dog likes sweet potatoes you should give it try!

DIY Dehydrated Sweet Potato Chews Recipe For Dogs:

If making dog treats is your jam, this sweet potato treat recipe is for you because all you really need is 1 ingredient but you can add more if you want!

Ingredients for homemade sweet potato chews

  • 4 medium or large sweet potatoes. You can get organic if they’re available in your area.
  • Ceylon cinnamon. You can brush them lightly with coconut oil or drizzle them with carob!

Drive to the store and get some sweet potatoes.

At the grocery store, you can usually find sweet potatoes by regular Idaho potatoes or somewhere close.

The size you get depends on your dogs.

Since I have big dogs I try to find the biggest sweet potatoes that I can.

I usually get 2-3 and it gives me about 20 slices. (give or take)

Directions

  • Wash and dry sweet potatoes
  • Preheat the oven to 250° F
  • Line your cookie sheet with parchment paper. (I ran out the other day and didn’t line my cookie sheets with anything and had minor sticking action BUT my cookie sheets are very well used 😉
  • Slice them up. I like to slice them on a cutting board. I slice the button first to give it a more stable base to cut. Be careful!
  • Lightly sprinkle the slices with Cinnamon

  • Bake for 2-3 hours flipping them over halfway through. Baking time is going to vary based on how thick you slice the sweet potatoes. If you use slice them thin using a mandoline, your baking time might be less. Just make sure to check on them regularly so they don’t burn. My dogs like crunchy sweet potato chews so I tend to leave mine in longer.
  • Allow chews to cool in the oven
  • Store in an airtight container for up to a week. Place in fridge if they will be around for more than a week.
  • And serve!

How To Slice Sweet Potato Chews

The way you slice them is up to you.

I slice them lengthwise to get bigger, longer chews but you can cut them widthwise if you want more of a round chip size.

You can even cut them into french fries if you want!

Go crazy just be careful when you go crazy!

Do You Have To Peel Sweet Potatoes When Making Dog Treats?

When I’m making sweet potato chews for my dogs, I don’t peel the skin.

I leave it on because I’m making crunchy treats and the skin gets baked and the skin contains extra nutrients.

If you’re making soft sweet potato dog treats, it might be a good idea to remove the skin because it can be hard for some dogs to digest.

So What’s So Good About Sweet Potatoes?

Sweet potatoes are a superfood for dogs that can tolerate them.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of potassium, manganese, and magnesium.

They also contain calcium, iron, and zinc and are low in sodium.

Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber which is good for digestive health.

Sweet potatoes contain Vitamins A, C, E, and B6.

You can bake sweet potatoes, boil sweet potatoes, dehydrate sweet potatoes and even make a DIY toy using sweet potatoes!

However, some dogs are allergic to sweet potatoes so they should always be added to a dog’s diet slowly if they’ve never had them before.

I like to lightly sprinkle our chews with a little Ceylon cinnamon.

Ceylon cinnamon is safe for most dogs to consume in small amounts but always check with your vet if you have any questions!

Yield: 20 dog chews

Total Time: 3 hours 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 Large Sweet Potatoes
  • Cinnamon or Coconut Oil (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry sweet potatoes
  2. Preheat oven to 250 degrees
  3. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  4.  Slice them up. The way you slice them is up to you. I slice them lengthwise to get bigger, longer chews but you can cut them widthwise if you want more of a round chip size. You can even cut them into french fries if you want! The thicker you cut them, the chewier they will be. I cut them about 1/4 inch. Because sweet potatoes can be hard to cut I always cut a slice off the bottom so it’s more stable on the cutting board.
  5. Place on cookie sheet and bake for 3-5 hours, flipping them over halfway through.
  6. If you want a crunchier chew, leave them in 20-30 minutes. I normally bake them for 3 hours and then leave them in the oven while it cools.
  7. After they cool, sweet potato chews can be stored in an airtight container or Ziploc bag and placed in the fridge for about 2 weeks. They can be frozen for a few months!

Notes

You can cut the sweet potatoes anyway you would like, just remeber that the thicker they are the longer they will take in the oven.

Does your dog like sweet potato chews?

Have you ever made them?

As with any food, we always recommend that you speak to your veterinarian before adding it to your dog’s diet.

I've never thought of this and it sounds like a fun change for my girls. I was wondering, though, if they should be limited due to high fiber content. Our oldest girl tends to have tummy issues at times.

These are so easy! I use my mandolin to slice the potatoes. The pre-packaged ones are SO expensive - I can make these for pennies, & I know exactly what's in them. Safe, healthy, inexpensive, easy, & my dog loves them. Thanks :)
