Looking for an easy homemade treat for your dog this holiday? These cranberry peanut butter dog treats are easy to make, contain just a few simple ingredients and have been given 2 paws up from my fluffy crew.
These homemade cranberry peanut butter treats are my treat of the month and the recipe would have been posted earlier but my first try at these failed miserably so I had to tweak it a little bit.
This dog treat recipe came out way better and if you’re wondering how I determine my recipes I look at a few things:
- all the ingredients blend and mix well together
- the dough cuts easily and is easy to roll
- they bake well
- they store well
- they make my dogs drool
This recipe is pretty similar to my apple & oat flour recipe because I like the way this dough works. I tried to use all peanut butter instead of the applesauce and the dough sucked because it crumbled.
Ingredients
All you need to make these cranberry peanut butter treats are oat flour, unsweetened applesauce, creamy peanut butter, fresh cranberries and eggs.
- 3 cups of oat flour
- 1/2 cup of plain unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter (no xylitol)
- 1/2 cup of fresh frozen cranberries washed
- 2 large eggs
Directions
- preheat oven to 350°F
- place cranberries in a food processor or blender and chop into small pieces
- add oat flour, applesauce, creamy peanut butter and eggs into a large mixing bowl
- mix all ingredients well
- add in chopped cranberries and gently mix
- place dough on a flat surface
- roll dough with a rolling pin
- cut dough into desired shapes
- place the cutouts onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper
- bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown
- cool completely ( I let our dog treats cool in the oven)
- Serve to your dog!
The amount of dog cookies you get will vary depending on the size of your cookie cutters.
I used different-sized cookie cutters and got a total of 56 dog treats
These treats should be stored in an airtight container in the fridge or freezer.
I always like to store mine in a freezer safe container in the freezer and then take them out in the morning to thaw. (they don’t take long to thaw)
If you want to make these cranberry dogs treats without peanut butter, you can add another 1/2 cup of plain applesauce instead.
The dough might be sticky, so if it is, allow it to chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes.
Can Dogs Have Cranberries?
Most dogs can have fresh cranberries in moderation but as with any needed food, you should always check with your veterinarian.
I normally stick with fresh plain cranberries but these can also be tart which can deter some dogs.
My dogs actually like cranberries plain or added into baked or frozen treats so I use them often but also in moderation combined with other dog-safe ingredients.
According to the AKC, both fresh and dried cranberries are safe to feed to dogs in small quantities.
Dried cranberries are also safe for most dogs as long as they aren’t mixed with raisins or have a ton of added sugar or artificial sweeteners that might contain xylitol so always read the ingredients on the bag.
Cranberry sauce is another iffy version of cranberries because it can also contain a lot of sugar or sugar substitutes.
