Homemade Apple and Sweet Potato Dog Treat Twists

These homemade apple and sweet potato dog treats twists are easy to make, low-calorie and your dog will love them!

We haven’t done a new dog treat recipe in a while and since it’s now officially fall, I thought this would be the perfect recipe to try out.

First, I’m going to say that I think these homemade apple and sweet potato dog treats are the perfect size for a large breed dog like the Newfie but if you have a smaller dog you can totally customize them to an appropriate size.

Second, you all know that I like to keep any homemade dog treat recipe simple because I am not a baker.

The easier the better I say!

So this treat recipe isn’t as basic as past recipes but it’s still super easy and only requires 5 ingredients!

Third, I was looking for a low-fat dog treat recipe to make for Odin and also one that doesn’t have peanut butter in it.

The dogs love peanut butter and I love peanut butter but Odin needs to cut a few calories and he loves sweet potatoes so this seemed like a good option for him!

Don’t get me wrong, he’s still going to get treats that have peanut butter but just not as many. (shhhhh….don’t tell him that!)

And the last thing I want to add before we get to the actual recipe, results are going to vary based on the size of your sweet potatoes and apples.

This dough has the potential to be sticky so you might have to tweak the dough and the cooking time a bit.

Baking Supplies Needed

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

  • Peel the skin off of the sweet potatoes once they’ve cooled and smash with a fork (if your potatoes burned a little bit on the bottom, just cut that off)
  • Add apples, mashed sweet potatoes, egg and cinnamon to a bowl and mix well
  • Slowly add your wheat flor, mixing as you go. I used my hands for this part! (if your dough is sticky, add more flour)

Homemade Apple and Sweet Potato Dog Treat Twists

  • Put dough in the fridge for 10-15 minutes to firm up a bit
  • Reduce the oven temp to 375° F

Once everything is mixed well, it’s time to assemble the twists!

You don’t have to make twists, you can use cookie cutters or make pretzel shapes or hearts. I just thought twists were a little different and perfect for the bigger dogs.

  • On clean counter or cutting board, you should divide your dough in 1/2 them 1/4’s but I pressed mine down into the bowl and then just took it out and cut it into a pizza. Don’t judge me.

  • Form a ball of one of your dough pieces and roll the dough out into a log with your hands.
  • I rolled mine into about 16 inches logs

  • Repeat with another piece of dough
  • Braid the logs and twist a bit if you want the treat twists to be a little tighter
  • Cut in half to make 8 inch twists

  • Repeat these steps until done
  • Bake your apple and sweet potato dog treats at 375° F for 40-45 minutes making sure to carefully flip 1/2 ways through.

  • Cool completely and serve to your dog! (Mine were still a little soft so I let them cool in the oven)
  • These treats should store well in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks

These twists are supposed to be crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.

I made smaller twists for Finn so if you have a smaller dog, just make your twists smaller.

Odin is nuts for these treats so I’m going to add them to our list of frequently made DIY dog treats- baked sweet potato chews and baked apple chips!

If you decide to make these for your dog, let me know how they like them!
