National Slobber Appreciation Day 2023

November 16th is National Slobber Appreciation Day and if you’re wondering why such a day exists, let me tell you about it.

This special day is dedicated to dogs that drool started in 2012 as a way to spread more awareness about dog breeds that drool and it’s been celebrated ever since and gaining more popularity each year.

While it’s a fun way to show off our dog’s best drooling talents, it’s meant to be educational.

For us, that means we emphasized the fact that Newfies drool and the reason why we do that is because there are a lot of people that like the breed but not the drool.

Some people miss the part about dog drool when researching the breed or they underestimate it.

Sometimes this means that as soon as their Newfie starts drooling, they want no part of it and in some cases, the dog is handed over to rescue or taken to a shelter.

It also opens up the door for breeders to market “dry-mouth” Newfoundlands which is a very dreaded term in the Newfoundland community.

I’m only going to say one thing about this topic and it’s a “dry mouth” is still going to drool.

My Newfie Doesn’t Drool That Much

Not every Newfie is going to be a leaky faucet but most Newfies will drool to some degree.

A lot of people say, “My Newfie doesn’t drool that much. Only when begging, eating, drinking and when they’re hot.”

Yeah. Same.

But they’re Newfies which means that they’re always hot, drinking water and begging.

See what I mean?

They might not all drool a lot in volume but they drool a lot in a day.

I take a lot of pictures and in most of the pictures, unless I use my sleeve to wipe it, Odin and Lou will have slobber dripping on their face.

They’re not just sitting there drooling for no reason.

They’re drooling because I’m holding a treat so they’ll look at the camera and since Lou can’t comprehend STAY, I’ve probably done it 45 times.

If You Can’t Handle The Drool, Don’t Get The Breed

It comes down to the obvious, if you don’t like dog drool, don’t get a dog breed that is known to drool.

It’s okay not to like drool what’s not okay is to try and stop a trait or alter a feature for your satisifaction or to make a few bucks.

National Slobber Appreciation Day 2023

Who Is National Slobber Appreciation For?

National Slobber Appreciation Day started off as a day for Newfies but over the years many other breeds have joined in on the day so this day is dedicated to all breeds that slobber!

Slobber Day Rules

There aren’t any rules when it comes to celebrating National Slobber Appreciation Day on November 16th and you don’t have to buy anything.

Just post your favorite drool monsters on whatever social media channel you use and have fun.

Over the years there’s been a handful of hashtags used to mark the day and you can use them all, one of them or none at all.

  • #nationalslobberappreciationday
  • #slobberappreciationday
  • #slobberday
  • #dogslobberday

Other Fun Ways To Celebrate Dog Slobber Day

If you need some help or some motivation for the big day here are a few things you can do:

  • make your dog a special treat to get the slobber flowing
  • post a video or picture on social media that shows your dog drooling
  • share tips on how you deal with dog drool (do you use drool bibs? What do you use to clean dog slobber off of walls and ceilings?)
  • donate to your local breed rescue group or shelter
  • share the term you use to describe your dog’s slobber (flooger, slime….etc.)
  • share and/or feature your dog’s favorite dog treat that always makes them drool (tag the dog treat brand too!)

I’ll be sharing all kinds of dog drool posts on our Facebook page for the next 7 days so you can tune in there if you’d like!
